AC dust causing my itchy eyes and sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a fine dust that settles on everything, and for the last couple of weeks, my throat has been constantly scratchy and my eyes are itchy. I live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and it's worst in the master bedroom. I've changed the filters but it hasn't helped. Could this dust be causing my symptoms and what kind of professional cleaning should I look for to fix it?

Yes, that fine dust is a likely cause of your symptoms. The persistent itchiness and sore throat are classic signs of mucosal irritation from airborne particulates. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly, accumulated debris inside the ductwork—a mix of fine desert sand, pollen, fungal spores, and skin cells—can be continuously circulated.

Simply changing the filter is often insufficient because the primary contamination source is within the ducts themselves, past the filter. In high-rises like JLT, shared ventilation shafts can sometimes contribute, but the issue is most commonly localized to your unit's internal system. Humidity from the coil can also make this dust stick to surfaces and agglomerate.

You need a professional duct cleaning service that goes beyond basic filter changes. Look for a provider that uses a truck-mounted HEPA-filtered vacuum unit to create negative pressure within your ducts, preventing dust from spreading into your living space during cleaning. They should use rotary brushes to dislodge debris from the duct walls. Avoid companies that only offer fogging or spraying without a thorough mechanical cleaning first.

Request a pre- and post-cleaning inspection, ideally with a borescope camera, to verify the level of contamination and the results. For health concerns like yours, a company that can provide a documented assessment is key. This type of deep cleaning can significantly reduce the particulate load in your air and alleviate the symptoms you're describing.
