AC grinding noise: handyman fix or HVAC specialist needed?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa's AC in the living area has been making a really loud grinding noise every time it kicks on, and it's struggling to cool the room down even though it's set to 22. We've put up with it for a few weeks but with summer really starting, we can't ignore it anymore. Is this something a handyman can fix for a few hundred dirhams, or do I absolutely need to call a specialized HVAC company for what sounds like a compressor issue?

That grinding noise is a compressor issue, and a handyman is not the right call here. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run nearly year-round under heavy dust and heat load, this symptom indicates a serious mechanical failure in progress.

The compressor is the heart of your AC unit, and a grinding sound typically means internal components like bearings or scrolls are failing. A handyman might temporarily stop a rattling panel but lacks the specialized tools, refrigerant handling certifications (required by law), and diagnostic equipment to address this. Attempting a cheap fix could lead to a complete compressor seizure, requiring a full system replacement at a significantly higher cost.

You need a certified HVAC specialist. They will perform a full diagnostic to confirm the compressor's health, check refrigerant levels and for leaks, and assess the entire system's electrical components. Given the symptom of poor cooling, the issue may extend beyond the compressor to the condenser coil or fan motor, which are also battered by our constant dust. Only a proper commercial-grade inspection can determine if a repair is viable or if a replacement is the more prudent long-term investment for a villa living area.
