AC making loud rattling noise: fix myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started making a loud rattling noise whenever it kicks on, especially at night. It’s been doing this for about two weeks and it’s driving me crazy. I’m pretty handy and have changed filters before, but I’m worried about messing with the unit itself. Is this something I can safely check myself or should I just call a maintenance company right away?

A loud rattling noise at startup typically indicates a loose or unbalanced component, like a fan blade, or debris caught in the blower assembly. Given Dubai's high ambient dust levels, it's common for loose particles to find their way into the unit and cause such noises.

For a basic check, ensure the power to the unit is completely off at the circuit breaker. You can safely remove the front plastic cover to visually inspect for any obvious obstructions, like a loose piece of debris. You can also check that the filter is correctly seated and clean, as an overly dirty filter can strain the fan motor. Do not attempt to remove or touch the internal blower wheel or motor yourself.

If the noise persists after a visual check and filter change, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The rattling could signify a failing motor bearing or a misaligned fan blade that requires specialized tools to rebalance. Continuous operation in this state can lead to more extensive and costly damage to the compressor. For apartment units, building management often has approved HVAC contractors who understand the specific make and model.
