AC making rattling noise: DIY fix or call technician?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a loud rattling noise every time it kicks on, and it's been getting worse over the last two weeks. I'm worried it might break down completely right as the weather is heating up. Is this something I can fix myself by cleaning the filters and checking the external unit, or do I definitely need to call a professional HVAC technician?

A rattling noise at startup often indicates a loose or unbalanced component in the fan assembly or a failing motor bearing. Given Dubai's climate, where ACs run nearly year-round under heavy dust loads, wear and tear accelerates significantly.
Start by turning the unit off at the circuit breaker for safety. You can clean or replace the air filter, as a clogged filter strains the entire system. Check the external condenser unit for any obvious obstructions like loose debris or palm fronds. However, do not attempt to open the internal casing yourself; this requires a professional to avoid damaging sensitive components or voiding warranties. For a persistent rattling that's worsening, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The issue could be a loose fan blade, compromised compressor mounts, or a refrigerant issue, all of which require trained diagnostics. In JVC, dust accumulation is particularly severe and can quickly lead from a minor noise to a complete system failure. A certified HVAC technician can identify the exact cause, perform the necessary repairs, and ensure the system is sealed correctly against our high humidity, which prevents secondary moisture and mould issues inside the ductwork. |
