AC mold causing our sinus headaches and cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit for the last month, and now I’ve spotted black speckles growing around the vent on the ceiling. My wife and I have both had constant sinus headaches and a nagging cough that just won't go away. Is this definitely mold, and could it be the reason we’re feeling so sick?

The black speckles around your AC vent are very likely mold, given the consistent moisture from the leak. The symptoms you're both experiencing—sinus headaches and a persistent cough—are classic indicators of mold exposure and can be directly linked to the contamination in your indoor air.

Dubai's high humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning create an ideal environment for mold growth, especially when a small leak provides a constant moisture source. The most immediate step is to stop the leak by having your AC unit serviced. However, simply fixing the leak won't address the existing growth. The mold on the ceiling and, more critically, inside the ductwork needs proper remediation.

For a situation like this with health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the contamination, often using lab analysis to identify the specific mold species, which helps determine the best remediation approach. In the UAE, reputable remediation companies follow standards like the NADCA ACR standard to ensure the mold is properly removed, not just superficially cleaned. The goal is to return the indoor air quality to a safe level, which should resolve your symptoms.
