AC sewage smell in Jumeirah apartment: call landlord immediately?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing a faint but constant sewage smell for the past three days, especially when it first kicks on. It’s strongest in the master bedroom and it’s giving me headaches. Is this something I need to call my landlord about immediately, or is it a normal thing that happens here and will clear up on its own?

A sewage smell from your AC is not normal and should not be ignored; it indicates a potential health risk and requires immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run year-round, this smell is often caused by a dried-out or faulty P-trap in the AC drain line. The U-bend of water that normally blocks sewer gases from entering your unit has evaporated, allowing the odor to come through the condensate drain pan and into your bedroom.
Headaches are a common symptom of exposure to low levels of sewer gas, which contains hydrogen sulfide and other irritants. Given the persistent nature over three days, this will not clear up on its own. You should contact your landlord or building management immediately. Dubai Municipality regulations hold property owners responsible for maintaining healthy indoor environmental quality, and this falls under necessary maintenance. Before calling, check if the smell is isolated to one unit or if neighbors are experiencing it too, which can help pinpoint a building-wide drain issue. When you report it, request that a certified HVAC technician inspect and service the entire system, not just add deodorizer. The fix typically involves refilling the P-trap and ensuring the drain line is clear of microbial growth, which thrives in our high humidity. For your safety, avoid using that specific AC unit until it has been professionally assessed. |
