AC smell in closet: HVAC issue or something else?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started smelling really weird, like a mix of damp and something sour. It started about two weeks ago and is getting stronger, especially when the AC turns on. I’ve checked for leaks and cleaned everything out, but I can’t find the source of the smell. Could this be a problem with the AC ductwork itself, and who should I call to check it out?

Based on your description, this is a classic symptom of microbial growth within your AC system, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and year-round reliance on air conditioning. When the AC unit turns on, it pushes air through the ductwork, and any mold or bacteria present in the system is dispersed directly into your closet.

The damp, sour odor you're experiencing is strongly indicative of mold or mildew. Even if you haven't found a visible leak, the problem likely originates in the HVAC system. Potential sources include a clogged condensate drain pan where stagnant water has accumulated, microbial growth on the cooling coils, or contaminated insulation within the ducts themselves. The dark, undisturbed environment of your closet, combined with the cool, damp air from the AC, creates a perfect breeding ground.

Given that the smell is strengthening, a professional inspection is crucial. In the UAE, indoor air quality is a serious health concern, and addressing microbial contamination promptly is recommended. Do not attempt to handle this yourself, as improper cleaning can disturb spores and spread contamination further.

You should call a certified HVAC and indoor environmental quality specialist. Our team at Saniservice is trained to conduct comprehensive inspections using borescopes and air quality testing to pinpoint the exact source of the odor within your ductwork and unit. We follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for remediation to ensure the problem is solved effectively and safely.
