Are ducts above shower source of my sneezing?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm last month, I noticed a significant increase in sneezing and congestion when I clean the ducts in my apartment’s bathroom. The vents are located right above the shower area, and I’ve been trying to keep it all clean but wonder if there might be some residual mold or allergens that aren’t getting removed properly. Have any of you experienced similar issues after a storm, and what cleaning methods have worked for ducts in this area?

Ducts located above the shower area can indeed be a source of sneezing and congestion. The vents in this region are prone to collecting moisture and residue from showers, which can lead to mold growth or harboring allergens that you might inhale during cleaning or everyday use.

In Dubai/UAE, it’s important to adhere to local regulations regarding indoor air quality. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) provides guidelines for building maintenance, which include periodic duct cleaning as part of a comprehensive hygiene plan. Given the recent dust storm, it's understandable that you're concerned about residual mold or allergens.

While DIY cleaning can be effective, it’s crucial to ensure thoroughness. Some tips to help manage this issue:

1. Proper Ventilation: Ensure your bathroom is well-ventilated after showers. This reduces moisture in the air and prevents condensation from building up on ductwork.

2. Regular Cleaning: Use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner with attachments to clean around the vents. This can help dislodge any debris that might be causing issues.

3. Humidity Control: Install a dehumidifier if necessary, particularly in high-moisture areas like bathrooms and kitchens, to reduce humidity levels which could promote mold growth.

4. Professional Inspection: If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms or notice visible signs of mold, it’s advisable to seek professional assistance. At Saniservice, we can perform a thorough inspection and cleaning of your ductwork, ensuring all areas are properly treated.

Remember, the key is to maintain a clean and dry environment, especially in high-moisture areas like bathrooms. If DIY methods don’t seem to be resolving the issue, it’s time to consider professional help.
