Are dust storms harmful to kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had a couple of weeks ago, I’ve noticed a persistent cough in both my kids and a musty smell in their bedroom that I can’t shake. The AC seemed to be running more than usual too, trying to filter out all the dust. Are there any specific health risks associated with living in such conditions? Should I consider hiring an indoor air quality expert or are these just common concerns for our climate here in Dubai?

Dust storms can indeed be harmful to kids and adults alike. In the UAE, particulate matter from dust storms can lead to respiratory issues like coughing and wheezing. The musty smell your kids are experiencing might indicate higher levels of moisture or mold growth in their room.

In Dubai, where we frequently experience dusty conditions, it's crucial to be aware that these storms can introduce allergens and irritants into your home's air, which could exacerbate existing health issues or cause new ones. For children, whose immune systems are still developing, the risks can be even more pronounced.

Given the recent storm you mentioned, it would be wise to consider having an indoor air quality expert take a look at your home. They can use tools like particulate matter sensors and moisture meters to assess whether the dust levels have increased and if there's any mold growth due to excess humidity, which is especially common when AC units are running overtime.

The UAE has regulations in place for indoor environmental quality that recommend regular inspections for new constructions as well as existing buildings. While these may not apply directly to your home, they underscore the importance of maintaining a healthy living environment.

If you decide to proceed with an inspection, reach out to us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. Our team can help identify any potential hazards and provide solutions to improve air quality in your home.

Remember, keeping your AC filters clean and running efficiently is key during such storms. Additionally, it's a good idea to use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels, which can prevent mold growth and other issues related to dampness.

Stay proactive about your indoor environment. Your family’s health is worth the effort!
