Are dust storms harming my kids?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new home on the outskirts of Dubai two weeks ago, dust storms seem almost like a daily occurrence. My kids play in the backyard frequently, but lately, their coughing has been worse than usual. I'm worried it might be due to all this dust. How can I protect them better when they're playing outside during these storms?

Dust storms can indeed pose some risks to your family's health, especially for kids who are more susceptible due to their smaller airways. The particulate matter and other pollutants carried by the dust can irritate respiratory systems leading to coughing or exacerbating existing conditions.

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, dust storms are a seasonal occurrence. They're mostly seen during spring when temperatures start rising and the weather is transitioning from winter to summer. However, with the increase in construction and urban development, dust from these storms can be more persistent and intense than ever before.

If your kids' coughing has worsened since moving into your new home, it's important to consider several factors:
1. Dust mites: The increased amount of dust could harbor higher numbers of dust mites which are known allergens that can irritate the respiratory system.
2. Pollen and other particulates: These can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks.

To protect your kids during these storms, take some preventive measures:

• Limit outdoor activities as much as possible when a storm is expected. If you must let them play outside, ensure they are wearing masks designed for dust protection to filter out particles.
• Keep windows and doors closed at home to prevent dust from entering the house. Consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters which can trap tiny particles that might have gotten through.
• Encourage your kids to wash their hands regularly and avoid touching their face during playtime.
• If they show signs of discomfort or if coughing persists, consider consulting a pediatrician for advice.

For more serious cases where you suspect the dust levels in your home may be causing significant health issues, it's wise to seek a professional inspection. Our company, Saniservice, offers expert indoor air quality assessments and remediation services tailored specifically for the UAE market. We can help identify sources of contamination and provide solutions to ensure a healthier living environment.
