Are symptoms from sandstorm dust normal?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent sandstorm that hit Dubai, we’ve had a layer of fine, gritty dust settle all over our living room. The storm passed about two days ago, but my kids have been complaining of sore throats and runny noses ever since. Is this normal? What can I do to help reduce these symptoms in our home?

Yes, the symptoms your kids are experiencing after the sandstorm can be quite common. The gritty dust that settled inside your home contains fine particles and possibly allergens which can irritate respiratory systems especially in children. This isn't unusual; after a storm like this, many families report similar issues.

First thing to do is clean up your living room asap. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down surfaces gently. Avoid using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter if you have one; it can actually spread particles around the home. A simple dust mop could be helpful too. Ensure that all windows are closed tightly and any open air conditioners or fans have their filters checked for sand particles.

To help reduce these symptoms, consider running an air purifier in your child's room. These devices can filter out fine particles and allergens from the air, which might ease discomfort. A quick check of your HVAC system to ensure it’s clean and free of debris would also be wise as clogged filters or vents could exacerbate the situation.

UAE regulations require that buildings meet certain standards for indoor air quality, but since sandstorms are such an unpredictable event, regular inspections aren't mandatory. However, if you notice persistent symptoms like severe coughing, wheezing, or nosebleeds in your family after multiple storms, it might be worth having a professional inspection.

In Dubai and the UAE, we recommend calling 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 for more information on air quality testing. They can provide you with advice specific to your home and possibly arrange an assessment if needed. Alternatively, email hello@saniservice.com for further assistance.

Remember, keeping indoor areas clean and using suitable air filtration methods can significantly reduce the impact of sandstorm dust. Stay vigilant during such events and take preventive steps to ensure a healthier environment at home.
