Best daily cleaning routine for polished marble floors?« Back to Previous Page

My villa's marble floors in the living area were just professionally polished a few months ago, but I'm already seeing new cloudy, dull patches near the entrance where we come in from the garden. I think it's from the sand and dust we track in, even though we take our shoes off. What's the best daily cleaning routine to stop this abrasive dust from scratching and dulling the polished surface again?

The best daily routine starts with preventing abrasive sand from ever reaching the floor. Place high-quality, washable walk-off mats both outside and inside the entrance door; these will trap the majority of sand and grit from shoes before you step onto the marble. Inside, consider having a dedicated, soft indoor mat or area rug in the entryway for bare feet to stand on after removing outdoor footwear.

For daily cleaning, dry methods are safest to avoid potential moisture issues but are ineffective against fine dust. Instead, use a microfiber dust mop, preferably dampened slightly with only clean, demineralized or distilled water. This creates enough electrostatic attraction to pick up the fine, abrasive dust without leaving a residue or using harsh chemicals. Never use a standard broom, as it can push the fine sand grains across the surface and cause micro-scratches.

For any noticeable grit or tracked-in sand, a well-wrung microfiber mop with pH-neutral cleaner specifically formulated for marble is essential. The high mineral content in Dubai's tap water can leave dulling deposits, so using demineralized water for your final rinse water is a key step often overlooked. In high-traffic entryways, this spot-cleaning might be needed daily.

If the dullness persists despite these measures, the polish itself may have been compromised by the abrasion. A professional assessment can determine if a re-polish is needed and recommend specific sealants suited for the local high-traffic, high-dust conditions.
