Best way to control closet moisture and prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom walk-in closet in my Jumeirah villa has started to feel damp and I’m finding small patches of mold on a few of my leather handbags stored on the top shelf. The AC vent is right outside the door, but it seems like the air isn't circulating properly inside the closed space, especially with the recent humidity. What’s the best way to control the moisture in there and protect my clothes—should I get a dehumidifier, use moisture absorbers like DampRid, or is there a better solution?

Closets in sealed rooms with poor air circulation are prime spots for humidity buildup in Dubai, especially during the more humid summer months. The core issue is likely stagnant, humid air trapped inside the closed space, with the cool air from your AC vent outside not effectively penetrating and dehumidifying the interior.

Start by improving air movement. Leave the closet door open for several hours each day to allow the room's air conditioning to circulate inside. Ensure the AC vent outside the door is fully open and unobstructed. For a more permanent solution, a small, quiet desktop fan placed inside the closet can run intermittently to keep air moving and prevent stagnation.

Moisture absorbers like silica gel packs or DampRid are a good immediate measure for a small, enclosed space and can help protect valuable items like leather goods. For a walk-in closet, a compact electric dehumidifier is a more robust, long-term solution as it actively removes moisture from the air.

However, these address the symptom, not the cause. The presence of mold indicates a persistent moisture issue. It is strongly recommended to have a professional assess the room's air balance and the performance of your AC system. An undersized AC unit, a clogged drain pan, or low refrigerant can reduce its dehumidification capacity, raising humidity levels throughout the home. A certified technician can verify the system is operating correctly. For the existing mold on your belongings, a specialist can advise on safe cleaning and confirm the closet is properly remediated to prevent recurrence.
