Black mold behind wardrobe in Dubai? How to inspect?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's an interior wall and I'm worried it's from the AC unit or maybe a hidden leak. What's the best way to get this properly inspected and treated in Dubai without getting ripped off?

Black mould behind furniture on an interior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by a combination of high humidity and a hidden condensation leak from the AC unit or a small plumbing seepage. The confined space and lack of airflow create a perfect environment for mould growth.

For a proper inspection, move the wardrobe away from the wall. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores. The critical first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Check the AC condensate drain line; a blocked or disconnected pipe often drips water inside the wall. Also inspect for any signs of plumbing leaks from adjacent bathrooms.

Given the climate and the potential for hidden damage, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Reputable providers will use a borescope to look inside wall cavities for hidden mould and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of water. They should provide a clear assessment and a scope of work before any treatment begins.

The treatment must address both the moisture source and the mould itself. Simply wiping the surface is ineffective. Proper remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause. To avoid being overcharged, seek a company that offers transparent diagnostics and can explain their process clearly. Ask for before-and-after lab testing to verify the results, as this provides concrete evidence of effectiveness rather than just a visual clean.
