Black mold in humid bedroom: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and we've been running the AC non-stop. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should we call our landlord immediately?

That's likely mold growth, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity, especially when AC runs constantly. The wall-ceiling corner is a classic cold spot where condensation forms, providing the moisture mold needs.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it dry. However, this only addresses visible growth, not the underlying moisture source or any hidden spores.

Given it's a rental villa, you should notify your landlord in writing immediately. Under Dubai rental regulations, structural issues like persistent dampness that lead to mold are typically the landlord's responsibility to investigate and remediate. They are obligated to provide a habitable environment.

The most effective approach is identifying and fixing the cause. This could be inadequate insulation in that corner (a thermal bridge), an AC unit not dehumidifying properly, or even a small leak. A professional inspection can pinpoint this. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact source, which is crucial for a permanent fix. Simply cleaning it without solving the humidity problem will cause it to return quickly. For health safety and to ensure the fix is permanent, a professional assessment is highly recommended.
