Black mold on wardrobe: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little, and now we've discovered a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the back of the bedroom wardrobe. It's been humid for the last month and I'm worried it's spreading. For a job this size in Dubai, should I just tackle it myself with bleach or is it definitely a case for calling in a professional mold removal company, and what kind of cost am I looking at?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah apartment, I strongly recommend you call a professional mold remediation company rather than attempting a DIY solution with bleach.

The combination of a leaking AC unit and Dubai's high humidity creates a perfect environment for mold growth. The visible patch on your wardrobe is likely just the surface manifestation; the moisture from the AC leak has probably penetrated the wall cavity behind it, allowing mold to proliferate out of sight. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing within the material. This often leads to the mold quickly returning, sometimes worse than before.

For a job of this size, a professional inspection is crucial. Our technicians use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion and hidden growth. The remediation process involves isolating the area, safely removing contaminated materials, treating the affected areas with EPA-approved biocides, and most importantly, identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture—in this case, your AC leak.

Regarding cost in Dubai, for a contained area like this, you could be looking at a range of AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the hidden damage and the repairs needed to the AC system. This is a worthwhile investment to protect your health and property from a recurring issue.
