Can a dehumidifier fix a musty closet smell in an old building?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet has started giving off this weird damp, almost moldy smell that's strongest in the mornings. We live in an older building in Deira, and even though I’ve cleared everything out and checked for leaks, I can't find the source. Is this something I can fix with a dehumidifier and cleaning, or do I need to call in a professional to check the walls?

A dehumidifier can help manage the immediate humidity but won't fix the underlying cause of a persistent musty smell in an old Deira building. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC operation, creates perfect conditions for mould growth inside walls or under floors, often from a slow, hidden pipe leak or condensation within the building structure.

Cleaning the closet interior with a vinegar solution is a good first step, but if the odour returns, especially strongest in the cooler mornings, the source is likely external. In many older Dubai buildings, the internal partition walls are not insulated, leading to condensation forming on the cooler concrete when humid air penetrates. This hidden dampness is a common cause.

For a smell that persists after a thorough cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source. They use tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters to see inside walls without destructive drilling, which is crucial for finding the origin in complex structures. Verifiable evidence from such a diagnostic is the only way to permanently resolve the issue.
