Can dampness cause health issues in basement?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell lingering in the basement where we store our winter clothes. The carpet down there feels damp to the touch, even though we’ve been running the dehumidifier non-stop. My kids have been coughing more than usual lately, and I suspect it might be due to mold or dust mites. Is there anything specific I can do to clean better and prevent these issues in the basement?

Absolutely dampness can cause health issues in your basement. When the air is humid and the environment stays moist for prolonged periods, it's a perfect breeding ground for mold, dust mites, and other allergens that can seriously impact respiratory health.

In the UAE, especially during rainy seasons or in areas with high humidity like Dubai, it’s essential to maintain proper indoor environmental quality. The musty smell you’ve noticed is often an indicator of mold growth which could be harmful if not addressed properly. Mold spores can trigger allergies and worsen asthma symptoms for both adults and children.

To tackle the dampness effectively:

1. Invest In A Dehumidifier: You're already running one, but ensure it’s powerful enough to handle your space. A dehumidifier with a capacity of 30-60 liters per day is suitable for small to medium-sized basements. Regularly empty and clean the collection tank.

2. Ventilate Properly: Open windows if possible to allow fresh air in, though this might be limited during rainy seasons. Consider installing an exhaust fan or ventilation system designed for your basement to improve air circulation.

3. Dry Out The Carpet: If it’s damp to touch, it means there's excess moisture which needs immediate attention. Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to extract water and ensure the carpet is thoroughly dried out before putting it back in place. You might need to replace the carpet if it can’t be fully dried.

4. Check For Leaks: Inspect your basement for any leaks or sources of dampness, especially around plumbing, windows, and doors. Addressing these will prevent further moisture issues.

5. Professional Inspection And Remediation: Given that you’ve noticed a musty smell and increased coughing among family members, it’s advisable to call in professionals like Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com for a thorough inspection and remediation plan. They can also provide guidance on how to prevent future issues.

Remember, maintaining indoor air quality is crucial for your health and well-being, especially during the rainy season in Dubai. Stay proactive and address these issues promptly to ensure a healthier living environment for you and your family.
