Can excess moisture cause mustiness?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell lingering in my living room even after airing it out. It's really starting to bother me, especially since my kids have been complaining of coughing fits lately. The AC seems to cycle on and off more than usual too. Is there something specific I can do to prevent this from happening again or at least reduce the mustiness?

Yes, excess moisture can indeed cause mustiness. This is common in the UAE and especially so during the rainy season which often brings humid air into our homes. In Dubai, we experience a variety of weather patterns throughout the year, sometimes leading to higher humidity levels that can result in unpleasant odors like moldy or damp smells.

The musty smell you're experiencing could be due to moisture seeping into your living room from outside or possibly even from within your home’s structure. Moisture issues often arise when there's a leak somewhere, poor ventilation, or insufficient insulation against outdoor humidity.

To address the situation, start by checking for any visible signs of water damage like wet patches on walls, ceilings, or floors. Look around for any leaks in pipes or fixtures and ensure that your air conditioning system is functioning properly to avoid condensation issues.

Given the climate in Dubai, it’s important to maintain a balance between indoor and outdoor humidity levels. Using dehumidifiers can help reduce moisture in the air if you have an unusually humid day. Also, make sure all windows and doors are tightly sealed when they’re not in use to prevent drafts that could lead to condensation.

Regular cleaning of your AC system is also crucial as dust and debris can block airflow and create conditions where mold thrives. Replace filters regularly according to the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure efficient operation.

If you notice persistent moisture issues or if the mustiness doesn’t go away, it’s a good idea to seek professional help. A qualified inspector from a company like ours at Saniservice can conduct a thorough inspection and recommend specific solutions tailored for your home in Dubai. We offer services such as mold testing and remediation if necessary.
