Can I clean attic ducts myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent damp smell lingering in my bedroom. My family has also complained about sneezing and itchy eyes more often when we’re inside. The AC vents are clean, but the ducts run through the attic, which gets quite hot during summer. Do you think I could safely clean these ducts myself or would it be better to call a professional?

Cleaning attic ducts yourself can be tricky and potentially hazardous. In the UAE particularly, due to the harsh summer conditions and the presence of mold and dust, it's important to consider both safety and effectiveness.

Firstly, the hot temperatures in attics during summer could lead to difficulties in accessing or cleaning the ductwork safely. Additionally, if there has been recent rain leading to a damp smell, there might be issues with moisture that require professional attention. Sneezing and itchy eyes reported by your family members suggest possible allergens like dust mites, mold spores, or other irritants which can be difficult to detect without proper equipment.

Attic ducts often run through areas not easily accessible, making self-cleaning a challenge. Moreover, if the ductwork is old or poorly maintained, cleaning it yourself might not address underlying issues and could even spread contaminants throughout your home’s air system.

In Dubai/UAE, local regulations do not explicitly ban DIY duct cleaning but emphasize safety standards that should be met. Hiring a professional ensures compliance with health and safety guidelines, plus they have the right equipment like dust collectors, vacuums, and respiratory protection to perform the task safely and effectively.

If you suspect mold growth due to recent rain, it's crucial to act quickly. Mold can produce harmful spores and gases that are detrimental to your family’s health. Professionals have techniques such as thermal imaging to detect hidden moisture and mold colonies which might not be visible to the naked eye.
