Can I clean black mold from bathroom grout myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has turned dark and feels slimy, and I'm starting to see a bit of black mold in the corners. I've tried a quick scrub with regular bathroom cleaner but it did nothing. Is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to handle it properly?

The slimy, dark grout you describe is a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and year-round AC use creating condensation. For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach can work. Use a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution or a dedicated grout cleaner with anti-fungal properties from a hardware store, along with a stiff brush. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated.

However, if the discoloration persists after a thorough scrub or the mold reappears quickly, it likely indicates a deeper issue. The mold may have penetrated the grout or there could be moisture trapped behind the tiles, which is a common problem in villas. In these cases, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. A professional assessment is needed to diagnose the moisture source—whether it's a hidden leak, inadequate sealing, or insufficient ventilation—and to properly remediate the root cause to prevent regrowth and potential structural damage.
