Can I clean black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately it's gotten worse. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes.
Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Small patches (under one square foot) on non-porous surfaces can often be cleaned yourself. The immediate cause is almost certainly condensation from the AC unit's cold air meeting Dubai's humid exterior wall, a very common issue here.
For a small area like a closet corner, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a detergent solution first to remove the surface growth, then use a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to disinfect. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Wipe down the cold wall regularly and improve air circulation in the closet. Consider a small desiccant dehumidifier. Hire a professional if the patch is larger than one square foot, if you suspect it's behind the wall (based on a musty smell or discoloration), or if household members have respiratory conditions. Professional remediation is also advised for porous materials like drywall or wood, as the mold roots penetrate deeply. A proper inspection can identify the exact species and the full extent of the problem, which is often not visible. In the UAE's climate, simply cleaning the surface without solving the condensation issue guarantees it will return. |
