Can I clean my AC coils myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My AC unit in the bedroom has been struggling to cool the room down, and my DEWA bill last month was way higher than usual. I pulled off the vent cover and the coils look absolutely caked in dust and grime. Is this a job I can tackle myself with a hose and some cleaner from Ace Hardware, or is it one of those things where I should just call a professional to avoid messing it up?

Cleaning dusty coils yourself is possible but carries risk. The main concern is damaging the delicate aluminum fins with high water pressure or corrosive chemicals, which can lead to costly repairs. For a light dust layer, using a soft brush and a vacuum cleaner on a low setting can be safe.

However, given the Dubai environment where year-round AC use and fine dust load coils continuously, the grime is often a hardened mixture of dust and moisture that requires specific non-acidic cleaners and professional-grade extraction tools to remove without harm. If the unit is already struggling to cool and your DEWA bill has spiked, the issue is likely severe. A professional inspection is advised to assess the coil's condition and check for underlying problems like refrigerant leaks or a failing compressor that cleaning alone won't fix. Reputable services document their work with before-and-after imagery and airflow measurements to verify performance restoration.
