Can I clean my AC coils myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC has been making this weird gurgling noise for a couple of weeks and now it’s barely blowing any cold air at all. I just pulled off the vent cover in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and the coils look absolutely disgusting, covered in a thick layer of black dust and grime. Is this something I can safely clean myself with a spray from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

That gurgling noise and loss of cooling are classic signs of severely clogged evaporator coils. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use and high ambient dust, coils become a filter for everything in the air, leading to the thick, damp grime you're seeing.

A surface cleaning with a consumer-grade coil spray from a hardware store can remove some loose debris, but it's unlikely to resolve a blockage that significant. These sprays are designed for light maintenance, not deep cleaning. More critically, forcefully spraying the fragile fins without proper equipment can bend them, permanently reducing airflow and efficiency. The moisture from DIY cleaning can also encourage mould growth if the system isn't thoroughly dried afterwards.

For a case this advanced, a professional cleaning is strongly advised. They use EPA-approved, non-toxic biocidal cleaners under high pressure to dissolve the hardened sludge and biological growth, followed by a rinse that captures the contaminated runoff—something you cannot do yourself. They will also check the drain pan and line, which is likely clogged and causing the gurgling sound.

The Dubai Municipality recommends regular maintenance of AC systems for public health reasons. A pro will provide a before-and-after report, often with photographic evidence from a micro-camera, to verify the coil and drain line are fully clear. This documentation is key for landlords or property management and ensures the job was done to a verifiable standard.
