Can I clean my AC's black fins myself?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom AC has been making this weird gurgling sound for a couple of weeks and now it’s barely blowing any cold air, even though the living room unit is fine. I live in a villa in Al Barsha and with this summer heat, it's becoming unbearable to sleep. I just opened the vent and the fins look completely black and clogged with dust. Is this something I can clean myself with a hose or do I absolutely need to call a professional for a chemical clean?

No, you should not attempt to clean those black, clogged fins yourself with a hose. The black buildup is likely a hardened mixture of fine Dubai dust and microbial growth, which a simple water spray will not remove and can actually force deeper into the unit. More critically, the gurgling sound and loss of cooling are strong indicators of a more serious issue, like a potential refrigerant leak or a clogged condensate drain line, which a DIY cleaning could worsen.
In the UAE's high-humidity climate, improper cleaning that leaves the coil wet can lead to rapid mould regrowth inside the unit, which then gets blown directly into your bedroom. A professional chemical clean is necessary to break down that hardened biofilm without bending the delicate fins. They will also properly diagnose the gurgling sound, which could be related to the drain pan being blocked or the system needing a technical repair beyond just cleaning. For a villa in Al Barsha, given the severity of the symptoms you describe, a full system inspection is strongly recommended to address the root cause of the poor performance and prevent further damage to the AC unit. |
