Can I clean my AC's sand-clogged coils myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been blowing weak, warm air for the last couple of weeks, and my Dewa bill just shot up. I live in a villa in Al Barsha, and when I finally looked at the outdoor unit, the coils are completely matted with dust and sand. I’m worried I’ve been running it like this for too long. Is this something I can safely clean myself with a hose, or do I absolutely need to call a professional?

As an expert in the UAE's indoor environmental quality sector, I strongly advise against cleaning severely sand-clogged AC coils yourself. The harsh Dubai climate, with its high levels of fine sand and dust, creates a uniquely challenging environment for AC systems. While a simple hose-down might seem tempting, it can cause significant damage.

Forcing water through the matted debris can bend the delicate aluminum fins, reducing airflow and efficiency further. More critically, improper cleaning can drive moisture and contaminants deep into the system, potentially leading to electrical issues and creating a breeding ground for mold within the unit—a serious health hazard in our high humidity. The pressure from a standard garden hose is often too high and can irreparably damage the coils.

Given that your unit is already blowing warm air and your DEWA bill has increased, this indicates a serious loss of efficiency and potential compressor strain. Running the unit in this state can lead to a complete system failure, which is far more costly than a professional cleaning.

For a villa in Al Barsha, the best course of action is to call a professional service like Saniservice. Our technicians use specialized low-pressure cleaning systems and EPA-approved coil cleaners that effectively remove cemented sand without damaging the coils. We also perform a full system inspection to ensure no underlying damage has occurred from the extended strain.

Protect your investment and your health. For a proper assessment and cleaning, please call Saniservice at 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com.
