Can I fix black bathroom grout myself with ACE products?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the floor tiles in my Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has turned from white to a dark, almost black color, and no matter how much I scrub with regular cleaner, it won't budge. I think the constant humidity from our showers is causing mold or deep-set dirt. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service for a deep steam clean?

This is a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and airborne dust. The black discoloration is almost certainly a combination of mildew and deeply ingrained fine dust particles from the atmosphere.
For a DIY approach, start with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide applied directly to the lines. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing vigorously with a stiff brush. In many cases, this can lift the surface mildew and lighten the stain. However, if the discoloration persists after this treatment, the fungal growth has likely penetrated deep into the porous grout, beyond the reach of surface cleaners. At that point, professional remediation is the most effective solution. A science-based service will use industrial-grade steam cleaning, which delivers heat deep into the pores to kill the root structure of the mold, followed by an antimicrobial treatment to inhibit regrowth. For a permanent fix, the underlying humidity issue must be addressed; ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after each shower. In severe, recurring cases, the grout may need to be removed and replaced with a higher-quality, less porous product. |
