Can I fix efflorescence on my garden wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa's garden wall in Al Barsha has started to look really bad, with white, powdery patches spreading all over it. I've tried washing it off a few times but it just comes back stronger after a few days. Is this that efflorescence salt issue I've heard about, and is it something I can fix myself with a specific cleaner from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional to stop it from damaging the wall?

Yes, you can attempt to clean efflorescence yourself, but it is a symptom of a deeper issue that often requires a professional solution, especially in Dubai's climate.

The white, powdery substance on your Al Barsha villa wall is indeed efflorescence. It occurs when water-soluble salts within the construction materials (like concrete blocks, mortar, or soil behind the wall) are dissolved by water ingress. The water carries these salts to the surface, where they crystallize as the water evaporates in our intense heat. The high humidity can also exacerbate the cycle. Simply washing it away is a temporary fix because it does not address the moisture source, and water can drive more salts to the surface.

For a DIY attempt, use a stiff bristle brush and a diluted solution of white vinegar or a proprietary efflorescence cleaner from a hardware store. Avoid high-pressure washers, as they can force water deeper into the wall. After brushing and rinsing, the area must dry completely. The critical final step is to seal the wall with a high-quality, breathable, vapor-permeable waterproofing sealant designed for UAE conditions. This allows internal moisture to escape while preventing new water from entering.

However, given that the efflorescence is recurring strongly, it indicates a persistent moisture problem. This could be from irrigation splash, a hidden leak in a pipe, or rising damp from the soil. Incorrect DIY sealing can trap moisture inside, leading to more severe structural damage like spalling, where the surface of the wall begins to crumble.

For a lasting solution and to prevent potential damage to your property's structure, a professional inspection is highly recommended. At Saniservice, our experts diagnose the exact moisture source, perform a comprehensive salt neutralization and hygienization treatment, and apply the correct long-term sealing products. This ensures the problem is resolved at its root, protecting your investment.
