Can I fix moldy AC smell myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp, almost moldy smell every time it kicks on, especially in the evenings. I’ve changed the filters but it hasn’t helped at all, and I’m starting to get headaches from it. Is this something I can fix myself with a coil cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional AC service?

That damp, moldy smell from your AC is a common issue in Dubai, especially in JVC, and points directly to microbial growth within the unit itself. Changing the filter only addresses incoming air; the smell originates from the evaporator coil and drip pan inside, areas that stay dark and damp from condensation year-round.

While a coil cleaner from a hardware store can temporarily reduce surface-level grime, it's unlikely to solve the problem completely. These sprays cannot reach the entire contaminated surface or address the root cause: a clogged condensate drain line. In Dubai's high humidity, this line traps stagnant water, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and mold that aerosolize into your air, often causing the headaches you're experiencing.

For a persistent smell that affects your health, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY chemicals can damage sensitive coil fins or create noxious fumes if misapplied. A certified technician will not only thoroughly clean the entire system with appropriate biocides but, crucially, will vacuum out the clogged drain line—this is often the primary source of the odor. They can also assess if your unit's drainage or insulation needs improvement to prevent rapid recontamination. If the smell returns quickly after a professional service, that is a key indicator that a deeper microbial issue may be present, warranting a lab test to identify the specific species.
