Can I remove bedroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of dark, fuzzy mold spots appearing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe. I think it’s because the wall faces the outside and gets cold from the AC, but I'm worried about our health and damaging the furniture. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle the moisture issue?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) caused by surface condensation, a DIY approach can be effective. For larger growth or if it's returning, the underlying moisture issue must be professionally addressed.
For a small area, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts water, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface colour and does not kill the root structure; it can also damage porous materials and release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. Apply the vinegar solution, scrub gently, and allow the area to dry completely. Improve air circulation around the wardrobe and ensure your AC is set to a humidity level below 60% to prevent recurrence. In Dubai's climate, this mold is likely caused by the temperature differential between your cold, AC-chilled exterior wall and the humid air inside. This creates constant condensation, which the dust in the air uses as a food source. If the mold covers a large area, has a strong musty odor, or returns after cleaning, the problem is systemic. A professional inspection is needed to identify the precise moisture source, which could be a deeper condensation issue or even a minor leak, and perform remediation that includes antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. They can also advise on long-term solutions like improving insulation or adjusting AC settings. |
