Can I remove black kitchen floor grout or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles on our kitchen floor in our Jumeirah villa has turned almost completely black, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it won't come out. It's been like this since the humid weather started a couple of months ago and it's making the whole room look dirty. I'm worried it might be mold. Do I need to call in a professional cleaning service with a steam cleaner, or is there a specific product available here that can actually fix this?

That black grout is almost certainly a fungal growth, not just dirt. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in kitchens with spills and steam, porous grout absorbs moisture and becomes an ideal breeding ground for mould. Bleach only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the root structure penetrating deep into the material.

For a small area, you can try a targeted approach with a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide or a dedicated grout cleaner containing anti-fungal agents. Scrub with a stiff brush and let it sit. However, if the discoloration has penetrated deeply and the grout feels soft or crumbly, the growth is likely extensive and a surface clean won't solve it.

Professional remediation is recommended when DIY fails, as the problem will just recur. A reputable service uses high-temperature steam cleaning, which kills mould spores deep within the grout without harsh chemicals. The most effective approach is often grout removal and re-grouting with a high-quality, mould-inhibiting epoxy grout, which is far more resistant to Dubai's humid climate and easier to keep clean long-term.
