Can I remove black mold from grout myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the floor tiles in my Jumeirah villa's bathroom has started to turn black and feels slimy, especially in the corner by the shower. I've tried scrubbing it with a regular brush and some bleach spray, but it just comes back after a couple of days. I'm worried it might be mold because of the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product, or should I just call a professional cleaning company?

That black, slimy grout is almost certainly mold, and it's a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and constant condensation from showers. While surface scrubbing with bleach might remove the visible growth temporarily, it often fails to kill the roots embedded deep within the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.
For a small, isolated patch, you can attempt a targeted DIY approach using a dedicated grout mold remover gel, not just bleach spray. These thicker gels cling to vertical surfaces longer, allowing the biocides to penetrate. Apply it generously, let it sit for the full recommended duration (often 30+ minutes), then scrub with a stiff grout brush. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure the room is well-ventilated to dry out completely. If the mold covers a large area, has a musty odor, or returns persistently despite thorough cleaning and moisture control, the growth is likely extensive. In such cases, especially in a villa where underlying issues can be more complex, a professional assessment is warranted. They can determine if the mold has penetrated behind the tiles and verify the species, as some types require specific remediation protocols for effective and safe removal. |
