Can I remove mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It's about the size of a dinner plate and the room has felt damp lately. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional company? Roughly, what would a proper mold remediation job for something this size cost in Dubai?

For a patch that size with a known moisture source, DIY is possible but carries risks. The damp feeling suggests humidity is high, which is common here with year-round AC use creating condensation issues.

You can attempt cleaning with a dedicated mold remover (more effective than bleach) from ACE, but strict containment is crucial. Seal the closet, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and never dry scrub as it releases spores. However, DIY only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause—the AC leak and elevated humidity must be fixed, or it will return rapidly.

Given the location is a bedroom and the patch is large, a professional assessment is often warranted. They can identify the exact mold species (some common in Dubai's climate are more problematic than others) and use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to properly contain and remove it. The cost for a professional job this size is typically not exorbitant, as it's a contained area, but always request an onsite assessment for an accurate scope and quote. Any reputable provider should explain the process and offer post-remediation verification.
