Chemical smell from AC causing headaches - who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha seems to be blowing a faint, chemical-like smell into the kids' bedrooms, and my youngest has been complaining of headaches in the morning. It's been going on for about two weeks and gets stronger when the AC first kicks on. I'm really worried about what they might be breathing in all night. Has anyone else dealt with this and know who I should call to test the air quality?

Chemical smells from AC units are a legitimate concern, particularly with children experiencing symptoms. The pattern you describe—strongest at startup—often points to an issue within the ductwork or the indoor unit itself.

In Dubai's climate, two common culprits are a refrigerant leak or off-gassing from materials after a cleaning. A refrigerant leak produces a distinct sweet, chemical odor and can cause the headaches you mention; this requires an AC technician to locate and repair the leak. If the system was recently cleaned, residual chemicals from harsh, non-evaporative cleaning agents can linger and be circulated, especially if the ducts weren't thoroughly rinsed.

For persistent unexplained odors and health symptoms, a professional indoor air quality assessment is the next step. Look for a provider that uses a combination of visual inspection tools (borescopes for ducts) and air sampling. The air samples should be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify any volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other particulates. In Dubai, many reputable companies hold certifications from DHA or Dubai Municipality, which helps verify their standards. Always request to see the methodology and the final lab report, as this documented evidence is what separates a proper diagnosis from a guess.
