Could AC filter replacement solve the odor?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange odor coming from the air vents in the living room, especially when the AC was on. It smells like mildew or dampness, which has been concerning given that we’ve lived here for 2 years and never experienced this before. Could this be related to our filter needing replacement?

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. The smell from your AC vents could indeed be related to an old filter that needs replacement. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, it’s not uncommon for humidity to cause such issues, especially after rain.

When the air conditioning system is running, moisture can build up and get trapped within the filter if it hasn't been cleaned or replaced recently. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mildew and other microorganisms that contribute to the dampness smell you're experiencing.

In Dubai, it's generally recommended to check your AC filters every month during peak usage periods like summer. For most households, changing them at least once a quarter is sufficient. However, if you've been using your AC heavily due to recent weather conditions or have had continuous use for an extended period, it might be time to take a closer look.

Given the situation you described, I would suggest replacing the filter as soon as possible and cleaning or replacing any other parts of the system that may have collected moisture. This includes checking the evaporator coil which can also harbor mold if not properly maintained.

But here's the thing, while this step is crucial, it might not solve the entire issue. Sometimes, the smell could be due to a more significant problem such as water damage or a deeper issue within the HVAC system that needs professional attention. It’s always wise to have an expert inspection done to rule out any serious issues.
