Could cleaning chemicals be causing our respiratory issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy cleaning they did in our flat a few weeks ago, I’ve started noticing a weird respiratory issue. The living room where they cleaned extensively has this persistent lingering scent that seems to irritate my throat. My kids have been complaining of coughing more often too. Have any of you noticed similar issues after housecleaning? Could it be from the cleaning chemicals or dust stirred up during the process?

Absolutely, cleaning chemicals can indeed be the culprit behind your respiratory issues. In Dubai and UAE, there's an array of stringent regulations governing indoor environmental quality, particularly concerning cleaning agents used in residential areas. The chemicals commonly found in household cleaners like bleach, ammonia, and certain disinfectants can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may irritate the throat, nose, and lungs, especially for individuals with sensitive respiratory systems.

Given your situation, it's not uncommon to experience such symptoms after a thorough clean. Many cleaning chemicals contain strong fragrances or solvents that might linger in the air, causing irritation, particularly in enclosed spaces like living rooms where ventilation is often limited. Children are also more susceptible due to their developing immune and respiratory systems.

To better understand what’s going on, you could consider having your home inspected by a professional. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice (you can reach them at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) specialize in environmental inspections and remediation services. They can conduct thorough tests to identify potential allergens or irritants present in your living space.

In the meantime, here are a few tips you might find helpful:
• Ensure good ventilation: Open windows and use fans to improve air circulation.
• Use natural alternatives: Opt for biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products that have less harsh chemicals.
• Masking agents: If the scent is particularly strong, try using activated charcoal or baking soda in areas where the odour persists.

Remember, maintaining a clean environment is important but so is ensuring it's done safely. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice promptly.
