Could damp smell and coughing be due to mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a damp smell lingering in our basement, even though it hasn't rained since. The AC in my apartment seems to be cycling more than usual, but it doesn’t seem to clear the air much. My kids have been coughing and sneezing more frequently lately, and I suspect it might be related to the indoor air quality down there. Could this be a sign of mold growth or other issues?

Hey there! Damp smells and increased coughing can indeed be signs of mold issues. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we've seen cases where post-rain humidity can linger and create a breeding ground for molds, especially in basements or areas with poor ventilation.

In your situation, it's important to note that while you haven't had rain recently, the AC cycling more than usual could indicate higher moisture levels. This might be leading to condensation in your apartment, particularly around pipes, windows, and other cooler surfaces. Mold loves warm, moist environments, so these spots are prime candidates for growth.

The UAE has specific regulations regarding indoor air quality and mold prevention. Building codes require proper ventilation systems and materials that resist moisture absorption. However, it's not uncommon to find areas in buildings where these standards may be compromised, especially in older or less well-maintained properties.

Given the symptoms your kids are experiencing—coughing and sneezing—it’s wise to get an inspection done as soon as possible. Mold can release spores into the air that can irritate the respiratory system, leading to allergies, asthma attacks, and other health issues.

I would recommend calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. They specialize in mold remediation and can assess your situation accurately. In the meantime, try to improve indoor air quality by ensuring good ventilation. Open windows if possible (check for external humidity first) and use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels.

Remember, early detection is key in preventing more serious health issues. Stay proactive and address any dampness or mold immediately.
