Could dampness affect indoor air quality?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent dampness in the corners of my bedroom that hasn't gone away. The AC seems to cycle on and off more frequently than it did before, which is quite annoying. My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I'm wondering if it could be due to indoor air quality issues. Should I bring this up with the landlord or can they handle fixing it themselves?

Absolutely dampness can affect indoor air quality. In the UAE like Dubai, persistent wet areas in your home can lead to mold growth which is a major concern for IAQ (indoor air quality). Mold spores thrive in moisture-rich environments and once they start growing, they can release allergens, irritants, and sometimes toxic substances known as mycotoxins into the air. These can trigger respiratory issues, especially in children and older adults.

The dampness you noticed could be a result of improper sealing around windows or doors during rainfalls, inadequate ventilation, or even an issue with your AC system that is causing condensation. The increased cycling of your AC might indicate it's struggling to maintain the desired temperature due to excess moisture, which isn't good for energy efficiency either.

Given this situation, it would be wise to address the dampness and mold concerns right away. You should definitely bring these issues up with your landlord as they are responsible for maintaining a safe living environment in accordance with local laws such as the Building Code of Dubai (BDC). However, if the landlord is unresponsive or unable to resolve the issue, engaging a professional environmental inspection company like ours would be beneficial.

We can conduct thorough inspections and provide detailed reports on any issues found. Our team can also recommend remediation steps based on UAE standards. For immediate actions, ensure you maintain good ventilation in the affected area, use dehumidifiers if necessary, and clean up any visible mold with appropriate precautions.

If your kids' coughing persists or worsens, consult a doctor as well to rule out other causes.
