Could dampness cause air quality issues?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent dampness and musty smell in the basement area where we store food. It’s particularly noticeable after it rains outside. My kids have been complaining of coughing more frequently lately, especially when they spend time down there with me. Could this be due to indoor air quality issues?

Yeah, dampness can definitely affect the air quality of your home. In dubai and uae, we often face climatic conditions that make it easier for moisture to build up, especially during rainy seasons or sudden changes in temperature. This dampness you're noticing in the basement area could be a sign of water intrusion which might lead to mold growth.

Molds are fungi that can thrive on damp surfaces, and they produce spores that float through the air. These spores can cause health issues like coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and even more serious conditions for people with asthma or allergies. Kids being more prone to these symptoms is not uncommon as their immune systems are still developing.

Uae regulations do require building owners to maintain a certain standard of indoor air quality. While your apartment might be compliant now, the presence of dampness in storage areas can certainly affect this. The UAE Building Code (EN 13501-1:2007) emphasizes the need for proper ventilation and moisture management systems.

If you're noticing increased coughing or other respiratory issues among family members after spending time down there, it would be wise to have a professional inspection. Saniservice can help with that - they can check for mold growth, assess the moisture levels, and advise on necessary remediation steps.

In the meantime, try to reduce moisture in the basement by using dehumidifiers or ensuring proper ventilation. If you spot any signs of mold, don’t touch it directly. Mold can spread quickly so call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional assessment and remediation.

Always keep an eye on the condition of your home's environment to avoid such issues in the future. Regular inspections and proper maintenance are key!
