Could dampness cause air quality issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rainstorm last month, I noticed a persistent dampness in the basement of our new apartment. The walls seem slightly moist even after we’ve used dehumidifiers, and it feels particularly chilly down there. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits every time they go down to play. Could this be related to indoor air quality issues?

Dampness can indeed cause serious indoor air quality issues. In the UAE, especially in Dubai where we have seen some heavy rainfall recently, moisture-related problems are quite common. The situation you're describing sounds pretty typical and could be linked to poor ventilation or drainage systems that aren't handling water efficiently.

The dampness you’re noticing in your basement might lead to mold growth which can affect air quality greatly. Mold spores can circulate through the air and cause respiratory issues, especially for kids who are more sensitive to allergens. The coughing fits your children have been experiencing could very well be linked to this dampness.

In the UAE, according to local standards like EN 13788-2014, it’s important to keep relative humidity under control as high moisture levels can lead to microbial growth and dust mite proliferation. In Dubai, during such weather conditions, maintaining a relative humidity of around 50% is advisable.

Since the dehumidifiers you've been using haven't fully resolved the issue, I'd recommend getting in touch with professional environmental inspectors who can assess the situation properly. They might suggest solutions like improving ventilation, repairing any leaks or damp-proofing walls which could help reduce moisture levels and improve air quality.

If this sounds serious to you, don’t hesitate to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a free consultation. Early intervention can often prevent more significant issues down the road.
