Could desert dust cause our coughs and itchy eyes?« Back to Previous Page

After the strong sandstorm we had a couple of weeks ago, I’ve noticed a persistent dry cough and some itchy eyes whenever I step outside my apartment in the evening. My kids have also been complaining about their throats hurting, especially after playing near the windows at night. Could this be due to the desert dust lingering inside our home?

Desert dust can indeed be the culprit for your symptoms. The strong sandstorm that recently hit Dubai could have left behind particulate matter that's lingering both outside and inside your apartment. In the UAE, we commonly experience these dusty conditions due to the frequent winds sweeping up fine particles from the desert.

These particles, which are typically composed of silica dust, can irritate the respiratory system leading to a dry cough and itchy eyes. For kids especially, their smaller airways might be more sensitive to such irritants, making them prone to throat discomfort post-playtime near windows where dust may gather easier.

To ensure your home's indoor environment remains safe, I recommend having a professional inspection done by our company. We can provide you with an accurate assessment of the levels of desert dust in your living space and suggest remedial actions if necessary. If your situation seems critical or worsening, don't hesitate to reach out - we're here for you at 800-MOLDS or email us at hello@saniservice.com.

In the meantime, there are some simple steps you can take:
• Keep windows closed especially during times of high dust levels
• Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to help reduce airborne particles
• Regularly clean surfaces and vacuum carpets to remove accumulated dust
• Encourage family members to wash their hands upon entering the home

Remember, keeping a close eye on indoor air quality is crucial in protecting everyone's health. If you notice any significant changes or worsening of symptoms, don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance.
