Could dirty ducts cause my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I’ve noticed a persistent cough and itchy eyes whenever I’m in my living room. The AC filter is usually pretty clean, but when I checked recently, there was a lot of dirt buildup. Could this be due to poor ductwork cleaning? What signs should I look for that indicate my home’s air ducts need cleaning?

Absolutely, dirty ducts can very well be the culprit behind your persistent cough and itchy eyes. In the UAE, especially during our dusty storms, airborne particles like dust, pollen, and even mold spores can get caught up in the HVAC system. When these particles accumulate over time within the air ducts, they can circulate through your home’s air supply, causing allergic reactions and other respiratory issues.

In Dubai, we experience significant sandstorms that often carry fine particulates into our homes. These can settle on AC filters but also get trapped deeper within the ductwork. If your AC filter is usually clean yet you're still noticing symptoms, it's a strong indication that the entire system might need attention.

Some signs to look out for include:
• Persistent coughing or wheezing
• Itchy eyes, nose, or throat
• Sneezing without apparent triggers
• A musty smell in your home (which could indicate mold growth)
• Dust build-up around vents

Regular maintenance is key. In the UAE and especially in Dubai where we deal with harsh environmental conditions, it’s advisable to have a professional inspection every 1-2 years. This will ensure that all parts of your HVAC system are clean and functioning properly.

If you suspect your ducts could be causing issues or if symptoms persist despite changing filters regularly, I strongly recommend calling an expert for a thorough inspection and cleaning.
