Could duct issues cause my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a strange odor lingering in the hallway right by our children's room. It's especially noticeable when the air conditioning is running. My kids have been coughing more than usual lately too, which has me worried it might be related to the ducts. Have any of you experienced similar issues and what did you do about it?

Absolutely could be! Duct issues can indeed cause coughing and other respiratory discomforts. The dust storm you had last month might have introduced a lot of particulates into your system which, combined with the air conditioning, could be triggering the coughing episodes in your kids.

In the UAE, especially during such storms, it's not uncommon to see an increase in cases where the ductwork isn't properly maintained. The dust and debris that get trapped in the ducts can circulate through the ventilation system, introducing allergens and irritants directly into living spaces like your children’s room. This could explain why you're noticing a strange odor too - it's possible mold or mildew has started to grow due to excess moisture from the storm.

In Dubai, there are no specific regulations mandating duct cleaning as of now, but I would highly recommend having a professional inspection done. This will help identify if there is any buildup in your system and ensure that the air quality is at its best. If it's determined that the ducts need attention, professional duct cleaning can be a great solution.

Remember to keep an eye out for other signs of poor indoor air quality such as sneezing, headaches, or eye irritation which could also point towards issues with your HVAC system. Regular maintenance and cleanings are crucial in maintaining good indoor environmental quality, particularly after storms like the one you experienced.
