Could dust storm cause indoor odor and coughs?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a lingering odor in the living room that’s really bothering me. My kids have been complaining of persistent coughs, and I’m starting to wonder if it could be from all the dust that got into the ducts. The AC filters are looking pretty grimy too. Have you had any issues like this after storms, or do you think getting our ducts cleaned might help?

Absolutely, dust storms can absolutely cause indoor odors and coughs. The storm last month sounds to be quite severe and it's not uncommon for such conditions to result in a buildup of particulates that could lead to both issues you're experiencing.

In dubai and the uae, we've seen similar cases after significant dust events. The high concentration of fine dust particles can find its way into your ductwork system, potentially leading to an unpleasant odor and health concerns, especially for kids whose respiratory systems are more sensitive.

Dust storm particulates contain a mix of soil, pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and even bits of insects or other debris that have been picked up during the storm. When these particles accumulate in your HVAC system, they can create a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, leading to those odors you're noticing.

The grimy appearance of your AC filters is a good indicator that the ducts are likely in need of cleaning. Dirty ductwork not only affects air quality but also reduces the efficiency of your air conditioning unit, leading to higher energy bills.

Given the severity of the storm and the symptoms your kids are experiencing, I'd highly recommend having an inspection done by professionals. Here at Saniservice we provide thorough duct cleaning services that can help remove these particulates from your system, improve air quality, and reduce allergens in your home.
