Could dust storm cause kids' cough from AC?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a persistent cough in both of my kids, especially in their bedroom. The AC vents are located right above their bed, and it’s been running non-stop since then. Could this be due to the dust getting into the ducts? Should I consider cleaning them?

Dust storms can indeed be a major source of indoor air pollution. In the UAE, particularly during such severe weather events, dust particles can easily enter your HVAC system through open vents and windows. When you notice persistent coughing, especially in specific areas of the home like where the AC is located, it’s plausible that these dust particles are making their way into the ducts and then recirculating throughout the house.

In Dubai/UAE conditions, the fine particulate matter from a dust storm can contain not only dust but also pollen, mold spores, and other allergens. These particles can irritate respiratory systems, especially in children who have smaller airways. The AC vents positioned above your kids' bed could be causing them to inhale these pollutants directly into their sleeping environment.

Considering the recent dust storm, it would be prudent to check if your ducts are clean. Accumulated dust and debris can act as a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which might exacerbate respiratory issues in children. In Dubai, where humidity levels can fluctuate significantly, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial.

For professional advice and inspection services, I recommend reaching out to companies like Saniservice. They specialize in environmental inspections and remediation with expertise tailored to the UAE market. Their contact details are 800-MOLDS or you can email them at hello@saniservice.com for a thorough assessment of your HVAC system.

While it's important to address this issue, remember that proper ventilation and air filtration systems can also play key roles in reducing indoor air pollution. Regular maintenance and cleaning of your AC units along with the use of HEPA filters might help alleviate symptoms until a professional inspection is completed.

Don't hesitate to take action; the health of your family should always be a top priority!
