Could high humidity cause my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new penthouse a few months ago, I’ve noticed a distinct mustiness in the children's room, especially after it rains. The humidity seems to linger even when the AC is on high. My kids have been coughing more frequently lately and I’m worried it might be related to the indoor humidity levels. Could there be a way to better control or reduce the humidity in our home?

High humidity can indeed contribute to your kids' coughs and could be part of the issue you're facing. In Dubai/UAE, especially during the rainy season, high humidity levels are common and can lead to a variety of indoor air quality issues including mustiness, mold growth, and respiratory discomfort.

Humidity levels above 60% in homes are generally considered uncomfortable for most people, but even levels between 40-50% can cause issues if combined with poor ventilation or high temperatures. The musty smell you're experiencing and the coughing your kids have been having could be linked to moisture build-up leading to mold growth.

In the UAE, especially in a penthouse which may not get as much natural air circulation due to its higher elevation, it’s important to maintain optimal humidity levels to prevent these issues. AC systems can help but they might not always do the job effectively if there's no proper dehumidification setup.

It would be wise to have your home inspected by a professional in building sciences or indoor environmental quality. They can perform moisture testing and provide advice on how to best manage humidity levels, including recommendations for dehumidifiers, air purifiers, or even structural changes like better sealing of gaps around windows and doors to improve ventilation.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com if you think it's necessary. They can offer specific guidance for your home in Dubai and help ensure a healthier indoor environment for your family.

Remember, keeping humidity levels between 30-50% is ideal to minimize the risk of mold growth and associated health issues. Regular checks on your AC system and ensuring proper ventilation are key steps you can take while waiting for professional advice.
