Could mold cause my kids' symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a musty smell lingering in the corners of our bedroom. My kids have been complaining of headaches and stuffy noses since then, especially in the mornings when they first wake up. The AC seems to be doing nothing to clear it out. Could this be mold or some other indoor air issue causing their symptoms?

Yes, mold could definitely be causing your kids' symptoms. After the heavy rains we've had lately, it's quite common for moisture to find its way into the hidden corners of our homes and lead to mold growth. In Dubai, as well as other parts of UAE, high humidity levels can exacerbate this issue making indoor air quality a serious concern.

Molds are fungi that grow in damp environments and thrive on organic materials like wood, paper, carpet, and textiles. They often produce spores which can become airborne and be breathed into the lungs causing respiratory issues such as headaches, stuffy noses, and even more severe problems if not addressed. Since your AC isn't helping clear out these symptoms, it's a strong indication that something is amiss.

In Dubai and UAE, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t have specific regulations for mold but recommends prompt action when mold is suspected to ensure health and safety. The musty smell you're noticing could be an early sign of mold growth. It’s important to act quickly as prolonged exposure can worsen symptoms especially in children.

To properly assess the situation, I highly recommend a professional inspection. You might want to contact a company like Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an expert evaluation of your home. They will be able to identify if there's active mold growth and how it can be remediated.

In the meantime, you could start by checking any areas that might have been affected by water like bathrooms, kitchens, corners where walls meet floors, or anywhere near leaking pipes. Ensure good ventilation in these areas and try using a dehumidifier to reduce moisture levels. Keeping your home clean and dry is key to preventing mold growth.

Remember, don't ignore the signs and act promptly for you and your family's health.
