Could odd smells cause family health issues?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new flat in Jumeirah a couple of months ago, I’ve noticed an odd smell coming from the living room. It’s not terribly strong but definitely there, especially after the air conditioning runs all night. My 5-year-old has been complaining of a persistent cough and my husband seems to be experiencing more frequent nosebleeds lately. Could this be related to indoor air quality? What steps should I take to address these concerns?

Could odd smells cause family health issues?

Certainly, an odd smell in your flat could be indicative of poor indoor air quality and potentially pose health risks to your family. In Dubai, as per the UAE Ministry of Public Works and other local authorities, maintaining a healthy indoor environment is crucial for residents' well-being.

The odour you're noticing especially after the AC runs may indicate issues such as dampness, mold growth, or even chemical pollutants from furniture, paints, or building materials. It's important to recognize that long-term exposure to these irritants can lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and other health issues in children and adults alike.

For starters, keep your flat well-ventilated by opening windows when weather permits and using exhaust fans over the kitchen and bathroom areas. Regular cleaning with mild detergents can help reduce dust and allergens. However, if the smell persists or becomes more noticeable, it’s advisable to seek a professional indoor air quality inspection.

In Dubai, companies like Saniservice offer comprehensive inspections that can identify sources of odors and pollutants in your home. Their services are well-regarded and compliant with local building codes. Contacting them at 800-MOLDS or sending an email to hello@saniservice.com could provide you with peace of mind knowing that any issues will be professionally addressed.

Remember, while small steps like improved ventilation can make a difference, they may not always solve the problem if it's more complex. So, don't hesitate to take the next step and seek professional help for a thorough assessment of your flat’s indoor air quality.
