Could odors from AC harm my kids?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be circulating some weird odor lately, especially during the night when we keep it on. It’s hard to pinpoint what it is, but it’s definitely making my kids cough more than usual. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this change. Could there be something wrong with the air quality in our unit or is it just a musty smell from somewhere?

Absolutely, odors from the AC can indeed pose concerns for your family's health, particularly for kids. In Dubai and the UAE, we have to consider several factors that might contribute to such issues. Air conditioning units are known to circulate air throughout a building but if not properly maintained, they can also spread dust, mold spores, bacteria, and other allergens.

In the UAE, especially during the humid summer months, it’s crucial to ensure your AC system is functioning optimally and regularly serviced according to local standards. The Emirates Standards Authority (ESA) and Dubai Municipality both have stringent guidelines for air quality in buildings, which include regular cleaning and maintenance of HVAC systems. This helps prevent issues like those you're experiencing.

Firstly, I'd recommend checking the filter on your AC unit; it’s common for filters to become clogged with dust and other particles over time. A dirty filter can exacerbate issues like odor and poor air quality. Replacing or cleaning the filter as per the manufacturer's instructions should be a priority.

Secondly, if you notice musty odors that persist even after changing the filter, there may be an underlying issue such as mold growth within your unit. Mold thrives in damp environments, making it common during our humid seasons. The UAE Building Code requires moisture control measures to prevent mold and mildew, but sometimes these can fail.
