Could poor air quality cause health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running a bit differently since we moved into our new place last year. There’s a constant, almost damp smell that comes from it, even when it's not actively cooling. My kids have been coughing quite a bit lately and I’ve noticed more dust and mold spots on the walls of the bathroom. Could this be related to the cleaning practices or the air quality here? What should I look out for in terms of health effects from poor indoor air quality, especially in Dubai’s climate?

Could poor air quality cause health issues?

Absolutely. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can indeed have serious implications for your health, especially considering the climate and conditions here in Dubai/UAE. The high temperatures and humidity can exacerbate IAQ problems, making it even more crucial to maintain a healthy environment.

In your case with the damp smell from the AC and the increase in dust and mold spots, these could be indicative of issues that might be impacting the air quality. Mold growth is particularly common given Dubai’s climate, which favors its development due to moisture retention. This can release spores into the air, causing respiratory irritations, coughing, and other symptoms you've noticed with your kids.

The constant damp smell from the AC unit could also suggest that it's not being cleaned properly or regularly. In Dubai, it's common for units to require more frequent maintenance due to the high temperatures which can lead to condensation issues. This moisture can promote mold growth inside the system and distribute spores throughout the home when the AC is on.

Health effects from poor IAQ can range widely depending on the exposure level and individual sensitivity. Common symptoms include eye, nose, and throat irritation; coughing; shortness of breath; headaches; fatigue; and more severe conditions like asthma exacerbation or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare-ups. Prolonged exposure to poor IAQ can also contribute to the development of lung diseases.

Given your concerns, it would be wise to have a professional inspection done to assess the current state of air quality in your home and identify any specific issues like mold or dust. In the UAE, regulations stipulate that buildings must maintain certain standards for indoor air quality, but these can vary, so a thorough assessment is recommended.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 for professional inspection services or email hello@saniservice.com to set up an appointment. Early detection and remediation are key to maintaining a healthy living environment, especially in the challenging climate of Dubai.

Remember, regular maintenance of your AC unit and ensuring good ventilation can significantly reduce IAQ issues. Always keep your home well-ventilated, use dehumidifiers if necessary, and clean or replace filters regularly.
